For Reality-Based Fitness Podcast #3, we are psyched to have nutrition expert Brad Pilon join us to talk about the concept of intermittent fasting and his book Eat-Stop-Eat.
For those interested, Keats did a review of the book on the book in his blog, HERE.

I was intrigued by something that Brad said on the show. When he was speaking about muscle gains did he really mean to imply that someone could consistently gain muscle mass while in a calorie deficit? Of course, this happens with people who are very unconditioned. But, I got the sense that he thought that a trained person could put on additional muscle mass without ever eating above maintenance calories.
Any insights?
Thanks!

Hey Chad,
Thanks for listening to the show and writing in. I can’t speak for Brad (you may want to email him your question), but I took him to mean that in a caloric deficit, using resistance training is essential for maintaining muscle mass, as muscles perform work and they need to be stimulated to prevent their breakdown when in a hypocaloric state. At least that is the way I think about it.
I agree with what you are saying, that you cannot gain muscle mass while in a caloric deficit (aside from someone who is deconditioned and over weight or pharmacological intervention). You need to have calories in order to support hypertrophy, otherwise it cannot take place.

I listened again, and I agree with you. There were a couple of things that he said that could be misinterpreted, but after listening again I get what he’s saying. When you guys were talking about the idea of gaining muscle mass Brad seems to have been talking about people who advocate grossly overeating, or creating “magical” supplement cocktails that will give you mass. He states that its all about the hard work. But, what I heard while dodging morning traffic was, “you don’t need calories to support muscle gains.” After a second listen its clear that this isn’t what he said.
Looking forward to the next episode,
Chad

Great podcast with Brad. The more I hear of this guy the more I like him. Not caught up in crap at all.
I couldn’t find a contact form but I had a few guest suggestions.
Leigh Peele
Jamie Hale
Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to listen James.
I am not really familiar with Leigh Peele’s work, as I have never read any of it. Are there books or articles you recommend me checking out, so I can get an idea of what sort of stuff she talks about before trying to interview her?
Jamie Hale would be a great interview as he is a skeptic like Keats and I.
Thanks for the feedback!
Patrick
